How to Choose Weed Barrier Fabric: Weight, Material & Service Life

Choosing the right weed barrier fabric is critical for long-term weed control, crop safety, and cost efficiency. The performance mainly depends on three key factors: material type, gram weight, and service life. Understanding these will help you select the most suitable product for orchards, farms, nurseries and landscaping.

Material is the foundation of quality. Most professional weed barrier fabrics use PP (polypropylene) or PE (polyethylene). PP offers high rigidity, good stability and easy installation, making it ideal for nurseries, short-term crops and flat land. PE features better flexibility, anti-aging performance and weather resistance, suitable for long-term outdoor use in orchards, mountains and severe environments. High-quality fabrics also include UV stabilizers to prevent tearing, breaking and fading under sunlight.

Gram weight directly determines durability and effect. Common weights range from 80g/m² to 120g/m². Lightweight 80–90g/m² fabric is economical and suitable for temporary planting, greenhouses and gardening. Medium-heavy 100–120g/m² fabric provides stronger puncture resistance, higher shading rate and better stability, recommended for fruit trees, tea gardens and perennial crops. Higher weight usually means longer service life and better weed suppression.

Service life is influenced by material, UV treatment and usage environment. Standard quality weed barrier fabric can last 2–3 years, while premium UV-stabilized products can maintain performance for 3–5 years outdoors. Choosing a longer-life model reduces replacement frequency and overall cost.

In summary, buyers should match material, weight and expected life to planting type, terrain and duration. A scientific selection improves weed control effect, reduces labor input and brings higher economic benefits to modern agricultural production.
